Which edge stitch should I choose fo my knitted pieces? Here, I will show you some examples about the edge stitch. 1. Knotted Edge It's also called garter stitch edge. It's good for side seam, because the bumps of the stitch help you line up the row. This is the edge I used for most of my sweater pattern. But the stitch would make the seam a little bumpy. Knotted edge in garter stitch: Knit the first and last stitch in each row Alternatively, depending on the pattern the first and last stitch can be purled. 2. Seam Edge It's the most common edge. It makes seaming your knit pieces easier, regardless of what stitch pattern is used in the rest of the row. Right Side Rows: knit the first and last stitch Wrong Side Rows: purl the first and last stitch 3. Chain Edge For the edges that will be visible, (e.g. scarves) the chain edge is the most decorative finish. There are several ways for this method. a. Right Side Rows: slip the first stitch knitwise, and knit the last stitch Wrong Side Rows: slip the first stitch purlwise, and purl the last stitch b. Right Side Rows: slip the first and last stitch knitwise Wrong Side Rows: purl the first and last stitch c. Right Side Rows: knit the first stitch, slip the last stitch purlwise with yarn back Wrong Side Rows: purl the first stitch, slip the last stitch purlwise with yarn front 4. two stitch I-cord a. knit to the last 2 stitches. slip the last 2 stitches purlwise with the yarn in front. Turn, and knit the 2 stitches as normal. purl to the last 2 stitch. slip the last 2 stitches purlwise with the yarn in front. b. knit to the last 2 stitches. slip the next stitch knitwise with yarn in back. knit the last stitich. turn. slip the first stitch purlwise, purl the 2nd stith, and purl the the last 2 stith. slip the next stitch purlwise with yarn in front. purl the last stitch.
